Enrichment is the act of making an animal’s life fuller by bringing out natural behaviors they would use daily in the wild, creating a healthy psychological well-being. The animal care staff, volunteers, and high school interns (vet techs of the future) work daily to create and deliver different enrichment to all animals, from the parrots to the carnivores.

WHY WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT

Your donation helps provide the new enrichment items, treats, and educational outreach that make this program possible. These are some of the enrichments you will see at the Las Vegas Zoo:

Environmental

Perches, shelves, tunnels, dens, dirt, and live foliage are all some of the environmental enrichment placed in the habitats to suit the unique needs of each animal.

Manipulative

Manipulative enrichments allow the animal to use cognitive reasoning by maneuvering an item in order to receive the treats inside.

Sensory

Auditory, tactile, olfactory, and visual – more commonly referred to as hearing, touching, smelling, and seeing – bring out our animal’s territorial and predatory behaviors.

Social Training

Caretakers, volunteers, and high school interns enjoy great pride in working hands-on with the majority of the animals.

Feeding

A change in diet or the method of feeding can create a fun variation for both animals and on-looking visitors alike.
