Activities for Your Visit to the Zoo

We
hope you find these activities helpful to your classroom studies
and your field trip. Please
copy these reproducible worksheets for your students to use while
visiting the Zoo. Students should be encouraged to use their observation and thinking skills to try to answer all questions. Have students bring
their activity sheet(s), pencils, and a folder or clipboard to write
on. The Animal Clues, Zoo Scavenger Hunt, Go on a Listening Walk, and Poetry Puzzle are geared for the lower grades. Off To The Zoo And What Can You Find activity is geared for the upper grades. While the students are observing the animals, they will be asked to fill out worksheets. The activities ask students to look at an animal's physical features such as color, body coverings, and the number of legs and eye location, etc. The following hints should help your students in filling out their worksheets: |
| Color | Encourage students to describe colors by using combined words such as grayish-brown or yellow-green to describe shades. If more than one color is present, have them note the locations of the colors on their worksheets. | |
| Body Coverings | The major types of body coverings are feathers, scales, hair or fur, and moist smooth skin. | |
| Eye Location | The eyes are located in the front of the head, near the top of the head, or on the side. Eye location and sight are important features that help animals catch prey or avoid predators. | |
| Other Interesting Features | Animals display
many interesting behaviors. For example, if a parrot feels threatened,
it may fluff up its feathers to appear larger and fiercer. Animals also have different physical features.
Eagles have strong, grasping feet, and sharp talons for hunting,
while ducks have wide, webbed feet for swimming. Students can also
include notes about how an animal sleeps, eats, sounds, scratches,
the length of its tail, and other interesting things at the bottom
of their worksheet by writing or drawing. |
